Shift + Tab not working?

Using WinXP Home SP2, Word2003.
I was working in Word when inadvertently I hit something and now when
I hit the Tab or Shift Tab key on the keyboard the cursor moves only
forward.
How do I get to work normally i.e. to move backward with Shift + Tab
and move forward with Tab.
In Word I went to Tools>AutoCorrect>Autoformat As You Type: "Set first
and left indent with tabs and backspace" but this did not fix it.
BTW - it's not working either in Notepad or Wordpad.
What do I need to do to get back to normal?

Nathan,
To the best of my knowledge shift+tab only works if you are in an outline
numbering scheme (Format - bullets and numbering). Tab gives a lower level
shift+tab a higher level.
