I'm afraid that when it spans several months you have made it.
How can you stop yourself? Look at the resource(s) and specifically at the
resource units. It might be very very low.
Change that (for instance in Task Information, Resources pad) to modify the
task's duration.
Of course, if you're talking summary task that is a different matter>.
