Showing icons

Please can someone help me?

I am using Project 2003 on an XP machine.

I open a task and go to the notes tab, click on insert an object, then
select "from file" and then browse to find the file.
This inserts the file fine, however despite ticking the link to file and the
display as Icon, it doesn't show the icon in the notes pane.
The Icon will show it if I click the "change Icon" button and select
Current, Default or From file, I can even change the displayed icon.
However when I click "OK" all it shows in the notes pane is a transparent
square and the title of the linked document.

This all works fine in Word on the same machine.

Help!

Hi Shane,

Just to clarify...when you say the icon doesn't show in the "notes pane" do
you mean you don't see the icon if you look at the Notes tab on the Task
Information dialog box, or you don't see the graphic icon representing the
Word document in the Indicator column?

I have tried to replicate your steps in Project 2003 (with SP-1) with the XP
operating system and I do see the graphic icon for the Word document on the
Notes tab in the Task Information dialog box, but all that is shown in the
Indicator column is the Notes indicator (looks like a yellow sticky note).
The object is inserted into the Notes field and so the display just shows
the note icon.

You can insert a hyperlink to the Word file, (Insert> Hyperlink) but again,
the graphic icon in the Indicator column will be the Hyperlink indicator,
not a graphic icon showing the Word file.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi Julie

Thanks for your help.
I don't see the icon if you look at the Notes tab on the Task Information
dialog box
or when I right hand click on the space it should be and choose change icon,
it then brings up a dilog box where I can choose the Currrent icon, Default
icon, or one from file. It only shows an Inco in this dilog box if I choose
"from file" it chooses a file path of C:\Windows\{901?????}\Wordicons.exe or
exicons.exe.

However when I return to the Notes tab on the Task Information dialog box
the icon is not displayed.

Hi Shane,

Thanks for the clarification. What kind of file (object) are you trying to
insert? I can reproduce the problem you mention if I try to insert an
Adobe Acrobat file (the icon disappears), but I can view graphic icons for
Word files, Excel files etc.

I really appreciate this help – thanks.

It seems to be any of the “Office files†Excel, Word etc (the icon
disappears). If I try with Notepad, or WordPad it works fine?

Hi Shane,

Well, this is a puzzler....A couple of questions:
1) Are you running SP1 with Project 2003? If not, try installing SP1. (I
run SP1 for MS Project, and that *may* be one of the differences.)
2) Have you tried Detect and Repair for MS Project? (Help menu.)
3) Which was installed first - office or MS Project? (My Project 2003 was
installed *after* MS Office.)
4) What versions of Word/Excel/PowerPoint are you using? (I am running the
XP releases.)

Hope this thoughts help. Again, let us know how you get along.

Hi Julie
In project about it doesn't mention SP1 so I will download that and try it?
I will let you know how I get on.
Have tried Detect and repair. Also un-installed and re-installed.
Project installed after office.

Have applied SP1 no change to the problem?
Only type of files that seem to work are TXT and wordPad files. WMN, MP3,
J{EGS use the default icon. Looks like a blank bit of paper?

I am using windows XP home SP2

Hi Shane,

Thanks for the information. I certainly would try SP1 because other than
the differences in the Office Products, I can't think of much else.

Do let us know how it all works out.

On the insert object dialog if I select a type of file for which the Icon
doesn't display i.e. a Word doc, it states that "File" Unknown type. It also
shows no icon for the "Current" or "Default" on the "change icon" dialog
box.

Could this be some thing to do with file association?

Hi Shane,

Well, I hate to say this, but I think it's a problem with Office 2003. I
just checked on a machine that has Project 2003 and Office 2003 and I ran
into the exact same problem you describe. The machine I was testing from
did not have SP1 for Office installed and I haven't yet tried to see if that
fixes the problem. I suggest you make sure that your installation of Office
(Excel, Word etc.) are service packed.

So sorry, I know it is not much help to say that I can recreate the problem.
But at least we know now, it doesn't appear to be an isolated problem.

I'm afraid I am out of suggestions other than to contact Microsoft directly.

Thank you for all your help.
One last question then, have you got any idea how I could raise this with MS?

Thanks for that, I will keep the group informed if I make any progress.
At the moment I can't see the link for "Report a
Microsoft product bug."

Hi Shane,

Thanks for the update. Do keep us posted. The link for Report a bug is the
fourth hyperlink on the page under the heading "Product Help and Support"

Hope this helps.

Hi Julie

Phone microsoft, as I am using a volume licence because I work for the NHS
in the UK, I have to report it through our IT department. I have tried to do
that and they are not interested in the least.

So if you have any joy or anyone else you know in reporting it to MS and
getting a response, please let me know.

(e-mail address removed)

Thanks

Shane
