since 2008 install safari downloads append .dot .pot .xla

Since installing office 2008 on my macbook pro with OSX 10.4.11, any download I make automatically appends a template extension regardless of the extension on the file. So a file "XYZ.ppt" would download and be "XYZ.ppt.pot".

This has also been noted by others in the Apple discussions for Safari.

Any solution to this?

Thanks Diane, but that is not the problem. That simply shows or hides the extension. The problem is that the Office 2008 installation has changed something that is making any download from Safari add an additional extension.

To be clear. Before I installed Office 2008, I could download any file type from Safari or Firefox, and the extension that was on the file is the one it had when downloaded. So if I went to a site and the file was named XYZ.ppt, i would get a downloaded file called XYZ.ppt. After installing 2008, the same file downloaded from firefox was correct (XYZ.ppt) but the same file downloaded from safari had an additional (wrong) extension - and that extension was always for a template. So XYZ.ppt had .pot added to become XYZ.ppt.pot.

Hope that is clearer!

It's pretty much just a cosmetic glitch. MS knows about it and
presumably has talked to Apple, to find wherever the problem is. But you
can just select the file name, delete the extra extension, and it will
all be fine. You might not even need to delete the extra extension to
open and use the document.

Which version of Safari? Make sure you have it fully updated & try running
Repair Disk Permissions. Not a "guaranteed fix" but it seems to make a
difference in some situations.

I have version 3.0.4 (523.12.2) which is the latest. I am religious about keeping my software up to date, and I always correct permissions before and after an installation.

I know I can simply change the name. But I download a lot of files, and I prefer Safari over Firefox. The point is, it is wrong behavior, and it started after MS 2008 installation. So if some file installation overwrote and safari file, or there is a conflict due to a new MS file, it is MS that must resolve this. If MS is looking into it and offers a path, that is progress!

Thanks!

You can always use Help | Send Feedback in any Office application to be
confident that MS has been informed of issues.

Just asked to be sure - you can't imagine how many users don't do so:) It
sounds like you've done about all you can do so you're among the many who
are looking for the fix more sooner than later. I'm certain that the issue
is being looked at.

I have the same problem, and I'm thinking about just uninstalling Office 08. It's a really lame product. Microsoft should just exit the Mac market altogether.

Let me see if I can understand your logic here...

You have a problem.

In a product that was not made by Microsoft.

And was not made by Apple.

And is not involved with anything Microsoft Office does.

And this is somehow *Microsoft's* fault?

And you offer this error, in code that Microsoft did not create, does not
use, and is not even aware of, as evidence that Microsoft should stop making
software for Macintosh?

Sorry: I simply can't connect the dots here :)

Hello, just wanted to let you know that we are aware of the issue and are
investigating concurrently with Apple to find a solution.

I made a modifiable workflow for Automator which will remove the
appended extensions.

As it is on my macbook, it looks in the Downloads folder for any file
ending in .pps, .dot, and .xla and removes the ending leaving only the
original extension.

Please test this out in your own environment to make sure it works for
you. Customize as needed. I (or Apple) cannot take responsibility if
it nukes your quarterly report.

Let me know if there are any changes to the workflow which should be
made.

Matt Centurión [MSFT],

Any news on a fix for this problem? It's still bugging the heck out of me.

Chris

The fix, when it comes, will simply appear in Apple's Software Update.

They won't comment in here, they will just fix it.

Cheers

I have the same problem - and it is very frustrating. Yes it is microsoft's problem. Prior to installing their program, I never had this happen. After I installed it - every time, whether or not the Office application was open or not.

Has there been any fix to this?

D

Daiya Mitchell

Not yet. You can manually delete the extra extension.

I vaguely remember that some people reported that it was fixed with the
12.0.1 Office update--but others were still seeing it. Which suggests
it's due to a complex interaction of software--in such cases it takes
some time to find the cause and implement a fix. The thing that makes a
problem show up is not always the same thing as the cause of the problem.

Still no fix? This is ridiculous.

Pay hundreds of dollars for a software update, and it causes a glaring bug like this. And going on six months now since this thread was started and still no fix.

I don't know why anyone would not blame Microsoft for this one. This started happening with Office 08. It didn't happen in '04.

Also, can someone please tell me how Office 08 manages to be even slower than Office 04 was on my MacBook despite being a Universal Binary?

John McGhie

OK, let me say it very plainly...

This problem is NOT in any of the computer code that Microsoft created.

Microsoft cannot change programs sold by other companies :)

So: Microsoft is NOT GOING to do anything. No matter how much you shout.

Let me put that another way: Let's say my lawn needs mowing. Can I blame
you for that? It would be nice if I could... I think you might tell me to
cut the damn grass! You would, right?

So: If you have applications on your computer that are not recognising file
types correctly, or are mishandling those file types, you need to contact
the software makers that made those applications. Shouting in here won't
have any effect at all: Microsoft won't read it, and we have nothing to do
with your computer.

I can tell you that Office 2008 is faster than Office 2004 on THIS MacBook.
Nearly twice as fast.

However: It is a little slower to start. One of the ways they speeded it
up was to do more work "before" the document is opened, so the computer has
less work to do while you are working on the document. That means
application startup will be slower, particularly the first start after a
reboot.

After that, it should be twice as fast as Office 2004, and it should get
faster the larger the document. With a document larger than 500 pages, the
difference is very noticeable.

If this is not your experience, we need you to post back with full details
of your software and hardware versions, and we can maybe help you speed
things up.

One of the first things we will say is that OS 10.5.3 is quite a bit more
power- and memory-hungry than OS 10.4. On a MacPro, you won't notice. But
on a laptop, yes, you will feel the slowdown. Particularly if you are
running less than 2 GB of RAM. Then it will be noticeably sluggish.

In which case you need to start making some value choices about speed versus
beauty. Turn off some of the pretties and things will go faster. Disable
some of the convenience features and things will speed up. Roll back to OS
10.4 and your speed will nearly double.

Hope this helps

Then beat on Apple - it's their product that's erroneously adding the extra
extension.
I don't know why anyone would not blame Microsoft for this one. This started

Because it isn't [exclusively] their fault. It didn't happen with earlier
versions of Safari & it doesn't happen with other browsers.

There are numerous reasons, most of which are local & specific to the
systems having the problem. The majority of users are not noticing any
significant slowdown although there's definitely room for improvement. The
updates released so far have helped a great deal & more are on the way.
