OK, let me say it very plainly...
This problem is NOT in any of the computer code that Microsoft created.

What makes you so confident about this? It only occurs after installing Office 2008. If you don't install it, you don't have the problem.

It appears that the problem lies in the way Microsoft has defined its MIME types in info.plist inside the applications. To their credit, it sounds like Apple has not necessarily made it clear what they were supposed to do, but to say that this problem has nothing to do with Microsoft is simply incorrect.

Hi Ishir:

What makes you so confident about this?

Because I know exactly what the cause is.
It only occurs after installing Office
2008. If you don't install it, you don't have the problem.

That's correct. The handling of deprecated file types has not been changed
for old products that have themselves been deprecated. However, I don't
think there is any guarantee that they won't be changed in the future.
It appears that the problem lies in the way Microsoft has defined its MIME
types in info.plist inside the applications. To their credit, it sounds like
Apple has not necessarily made it clear what they were supposed to do, but to
say that this problem has nothing to do with Microsoft is simply incorrect.

Not so: It's to do with the file type the saving application (e.g. FireFox,
Safari) is writing into the file on save.

The issue does not occur if the file type correctly reflects the content of
the file, and the file content is not one of the deprecated types.

Cheers

greetings
on MacPro 2x3.2, Safari 3.1.1, Word 2008 and Word 2004 installed, MacOS 10.5.3 this happens (that is I get file.doc.dot)
on MBP 2.6, Safari 3.1.1, Word 2008 and Word 2004 installed, MacOS 10.5.3 this does not happen (that is I get file.doc)
do not care who is responsible
removing .dot is no problem
just would like to know how to fix or if this is a bug that is not fixable by user

so either please
1) here is how to fix or
2) you cannot fix

thank you

but I have rebooted the MacPro multiple times
and still MacPro does .doc.dot and MBP does .doc

SP1 fixed this for most people.

Just did a search on Apple Discussions and found these links:

General discussion of the problem and some fixes. Gives you a good
understanding of the problem as well.

<http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6664335>

This is supposed to fix it.

I would archive (zip) your Office folder for backup in case the fix makes
more of a mess.

thank you

the info.plist files on the MBP ( that does doc correctly) and the MacPro (that saves docdot) are identical which seems to suggest more to this issue than the info.plist file

by the way have Office 2008 1211 and Office 2004 1150

my goodness
I ran Onyx 1.9.5 LaunchServices on the MacPro and the docdot problem seems to be gone
will it come back? who knows, but is gone right now

E

alas, after reboot docdot came back on the MacPro
MBP is still fine

why would Onyx LaunchServices fix it but only until reboot

I think answer is I can't fix it so time to move on

when I upgraded to Mac Office 12.1.1 this problem went away for a while (that was the first thing I tested when 12.1.1 came out!) but now its back! maybe it came back when I upgraded to OS X 10.5.4 which came out a bit after the 12.1.1 update... It just SOOOOOO annoying why can't they get it straighten out.

Um.. I don't get this problem any more with the 2.1.2 update. Can anyone
else confirm this?

It's been a random problem. Not everyone experienced it even in the
beginning.

Be happy it's fixed for you. :)
