size of custom dictionaries?

Steve

Is there a specific maximum size, in bytes or lines, that a custom
dictionary can be before error msgs start appearing?

I am running win and office XP.

Thanks.

See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211489 which says there is a limit of
5000 words and 65,593 bytes. It is my understanding that this limit does not
apply to the English language versions of Word since Word 2000. Instead,
larger files slow Word down (and that may depend on RAM). I would expect
that at least the 32Mb limit on Word file sizes would apply to the custom
dictionary, but could be wrong.

Since they removed the Help topic in Word 2003, I can't easily tell you, but
you can easily find out in Word 2002. Look for the Help topic "Limits for
Word." It tells the maximum size of a custom dictionary (in bytes).

Yes, thanks for the hint. I found the reference - the limit is still 5,000
words. I guess I will be splitting up my dictionary. Thanks!

Actually, I believe Charles is correct. A Microsoft person has
posted an answer to this question numerous times in the
word.spelling.grammar newsgroup. Quite possibly, the Help has simply
not been updated.
