Slide number won't show

No matter how many different ways I try, I can't get a slide number to show up. I add it as an element to a master page. When that didn't work, I removed it and added a footer with slide numbers inside. That didn't work. The footer and slide number elements are not covered by any other elements and they are done in black text on a white background. Why won't the page numbers show up?

I'm not sure from your descriptions how you're actually attempting to
activate slide numbers, so I'm just going to describe the basic procedure:

Go to View> Header & Footer..., click the checkbox for Slide Number, click
OK. There should be nothing more necessary.

The placeholders in the Master are there for the purpose of changing the
formatting & positioning of the slide numbers *if* they're used & have
nothing to do with causing the numbering to be turned on.

I did that before I posted, to no avail. When I got your reply, I tried again but it didn't work. So I went in to check that I had turned on page number properly (clicking the check box and then saying what page number I wanted it to start on) but it was unchecked. So I checked it again and said "apply to all", then immediately reopened "view header and footer" and slide number was unchecked! But i had just checked it twice. So I tried again and again. Every time I went back in to "view header and footer", slide number was unchecked even though I checked it. So it seems that PP is ignoring my effort to set the page number.

The only reason I know of for that is if you are on the Title Slide & have
the box checked for "Don't show on Title Slide". If you select a different
slide the number should show & the settings will be in place in the dialog.

If the numbers aren't showing on the other slides it may be that you've done
something in the Masters as a result of your previous efforts. You may need
to go back to Master Slide view & use the Insert> Master Placeholders> Slide
Number command to replace the placeholder.

If you still have a problem try creating a new presentation, insert a few
slides & turn on page numbers to see whether it's a general issue or just a
condition with the currently problematic file. BTW - You can also use the
Insert menu to select either Slide Number or Date & Time in order to get
into the Header & Footer dialog.

I pulled several PPTs into Powerpoint 2008 running on Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard).
These were originally created under XP in Office 2003 PPT and I had the same
issue. No way to get slide number edits on master slide to convey to normal
view. I deleted each and every page number box in normal view, went back
into header/footer and reapplied the settings. Went back into normal view and
my edits appeared. Apparently, the preexisting page number boxes could not
be edited and were blocking the ability of the slide master to effect my
changes. Just FYI: I tried more edits to page number (e.g. changed color)
and found that I had to go into headers/footers and unclick page numbers,
apply that setting and then reclick page numbers and apply again before the
change would take place. Not the way it SHOULD work, but, hey, we do what we
can.
