slow MS Word

N

nickdumble

There are a few users on this computer so I do not know all that may have been done to the program, but MS Word suddenly got extremely slow and cannot even keep up with my typing. Other programs on the machine are fast. I have had nortons virus and after the problem started got spy hunter. Where should I look to disable stuff that is slowing this program?

Not a guru here.
My search does not yield and normal.dot documents. I moved all add-ins that were in the microsoft office folder to my desktop but no change.
My search yielded 72 documents with the words "temp files" in them. I am not sure if they can all be removed or not.

Don't delete anything you are unsure about!

Normal.dot is a hidden system file on the latest Word versions. You will
need to set Windows Explorer to display hidden and system files from its
Tools > folder options > view dialog. I would recommend that you also set
Explorer to display the extensions of known file types. This may not produce
such user friendly displays in file dialogs but it does ensure that you know
exactly which files you are dealing with.

For temporary files that need to be deleted, see
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm and for more
information on problems starting Word, see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm. I am not convinced
that the files you moved to your desktop are the correct files!

There was an old adage I was given when I first started work:
"When in doubt - do nowt!" It applies equally here :)
