some bmp pictures will show others have placeholders

I created a doc with quite a few bmp files embedded into it in 2003. I saved
the file for 97 and brought it to an older machine with 97. When I tried to
edit the file and save it in 97 some of the pictures disappear or seem to
have a placeholder while others appear as normal. I have played with the
placeholder checkbox with no success. I actually have several different docs
and some work ok while others do not -- I am totally confused and frustrated
by this.
