Some FP email form submissions are failing

J

John3

I host a number of FP sites on my server, and one person is having trouble
with some of his forms. When the form is submitted, I get the following
error in the browser:

User: please report details to this site's webmaster.
Webmaster: please see the server's application event log for more details

On the web server, I have the following error in the log:

Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions:
http://www.gallantgraphics.com - Error #160005 Message: Bad response from
SMTP host'mail.cornells.com': 551 Receive of data is denied .

The mail server SMTP is configured to accept connections from our web
server, so it appears to be some bad data in the FP form being submitted.
I've run a check on the server extensions and recalculated the webs on the
server and that hasn't helped. I read some past newsgroups postings that
suggested mismatched form field settings could cause this...is that
possible?

Thanks!

John

PS - One example of a broken form is at
http://www.gallantgraphics.com/bmwna-link/_vti_bin/shtml.exe/business_cards1.htm. Don't critique the style of the page...I didn't design it. :)

The error 551 means "relaying denied".

Is the mail domain (cornells) the same as the web domain?

Does the mail server for cornells use authentication? If so, authentication
is not supported in the FP server extensions email transport.

551 is a generic error that just means the SMTP connection was rejected.
The mail server doesn't require authentication from IP's listed in a
"whitelist" and the web server is on that list. I have other sites, and
even other forms on this person's site, that can successfully submit email
forms.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn't appear to be anything in the SMTP
configuration.

I will stand by my statement that the email is not local to the server, IMO.

Hope you work it out.

Looks like it was bizarre data in the subject line from the form causing the
message to be rejected by an SMTP protocol filter at the mail server. I had
the client correct his forms to do some validation on the submissions (he
had no validation at all for any of the form fields).

Thanks again for the suggestion.
