spell checker in word 2000

My spell checker doesn't seem to be working. Mistakes are in the text but it
is not being recognised as a mistake. When I go to check spelling/grammar it
says
word cannot find the spelling file C:// Program Files etc I click ok and
then it says that the spell check has been complete yet there are still
mistakes.
I have tried to reinstall Microsoft Word 2000 on this laptop, going through
the add/remove components but I don't have the Microsoft Word 2000 cd.
Please can someone help me. I have been trying to solve this problem for ages.
