Spell checking French

Z

Zack

Hello -

I'm trying to figure out how to activate MS Word's spell-check when
writing a document in French (my default language is English).

When I first start typing French words, Word underlines almost all of
them as being misspelled, which of course is what one would expect
from an English spell checker. When I go to Tools>language and select
'French', the red squiggly underlining disappears. So far so good.
However, once 'French' is selected as the language Word refuses to
indicate that ANYTHING is misspelled, including random strings of
letters that bear no relationship to anything even vaguely French.
I've double checked that 'check spelling as I type' in Word
preferences is selected, I've chosen French as my keyboard layout (boy
do the French have some odd ideas about keyboard layout)...

I'm using the latest version of Word 2004, OS10.3.9. Any suggestions
greatly appreciated!

The keyboard layout is irrelevant, but are you sure that the MS French Proofing Tools have been installed?

As stated in the other reply, it's not relevant.
The French use a different keyboard layout also because they use letters
with a different frequency and need to have an easy access to accented
characters...
As the other post stated, you need to double-check that the French
proofing tools are installed,

I suspect that this may indeed be the problem, but could you please
let me know HOW to check whether French proofing tools are installed?
And if they are not, will it be a simple matter of running the Word
installer (using one of the 'custom' options) to install them, or will
I have to do a complete reinstall of the full Word program?

Thanks!

I would be inclined to simply run the installer and choose the Custom
Option.

It will add the French tools if they're not there, or leave them alone if
they are.

Cheers

Well, it can't get much simpler than that! I'll give it a try. Thank
you!
