If you buy the SQL license through one of Microsoft's volume license
programs, you get "downgrade" rights to use earlier versions instead. You
could buy SQL 2005 and install SQL 2000. Later you upgrade to 2005.
Downgrade rights are not available if you buy a retail version, however.
