Start / Finish Date Calculation Erros

J

Jerry H.

I am using MS Proj Prof 2003. My Project Administrator is using MS Prof Prof
2000. When he sends me a copy of the Proj file (*.mpp), the file I open on
my computer sporadically has different start/finish dates and durations from
the one on his computer. If I send the file on my computer back to him, he
sees the correct data when he opens the file. I have checked all the
variables, such as project calendar, and the are the same in both project
files. Any ideas as to what could be causing this issue. Thanks!

There is no such thing as Project Professional 2000.
There are some minor differences between the two but the dates should be
similar. I think you probably need to go through all the settings and see if
they really are exactly the same. If the difference is minor I wouldn't
worry about it. Another option is to have that person upgrade.

Sometime anomolies in start and end dates when moving files between
computers can be traced to the hours per day settings on the Tools Options
menu, Calendar page.

Hi Jerry,

did you find solution?
I have very similar problem - but both of us (me and my coolleague) use the
same version of MS Project (2003 Standard).

Thanks

Hello Jan,

Is calculation set to automatic on both user's machines? Is resource
leveling set to automatic? Is the service pack the same on both
machines?

You don't really give us a great deal of information -- does it happen
with all projects? Just some projects? Are you sure they are both the
same file, not just one with the same name that may be stored in
different location?

I'm afraid without further information from you, we are reduced to
guessing. Give us a bit more background and we'll try to help.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Hi JulieS,

thanks for your interest.
Here are more detailed information:
- settings for both workstations seems to be the same (distributed
global.mpt file)
- calculation is set to automatic on both workstations
- resource level is set to manual (day-by-day) on both workstations
- version of MS Project is 2003 Standard, SP3
- this problem is with all projects. Problem is with tasks with assigned
resources and defined work - every work and duration is "doubled" - and as a
result start or finish date is changed
- I'm sure it is the same mpp file - project plan was created on one machine
(stored locally on hard disk) and then copied to hard disk of another machine
(and there is a problem).

My question was, if Jerry found solution (probably some bad or missing
settings ...)

Thanks for your help.

Jan

Hello Jan,

Thanks for the additional information. If I understand you, the work and
duration for all tasks with resources assigned is doubling when you open
all files? Is it possible that there is a macro (VBA) firing in the
background when each file is opened? Try setting your security settings
(Tools > Macro > Security) to "Very High". Exit Project, restart and
open a file -- same problem?

I assume both you and your coworker are running virus protection
programs and have run a full scan?

If the work/duration doubles on your machine and you save the file --
when you send the file back to your coworker and s/he opens the file,
does it show as you saw it?

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
