Still frozen out of On-line clip art--PLEASE HELP!

A

AustinPAWS

I'm sorry, Mary--I tried what you told me--NOTHING works. I'm starting to
panic as I use the office on-line clipart constantly. The only step I didn't
try was deleting the Office cookie because I don't know how to do that. I am
not a technical person. In addition to being frozen out of Office on-line
clip art, I am not able to engage a hyperlink. I get the same message each
time: "Unable to open. Cannot open specified file". I can't understand why
everything was working fine a couple of days ago and now everything seems to
be locked up. I even found something (I'm not sure how I got there)--but
there was some tool I ran to reconfigure Publisher 2003 and that didn't help
either. I emptied all my temporary files. Has this happened to anybody
else? Is there a connection between the on-line clip art and hyperlinks not
working?????

To find the cookie, In Internet Explorer, tools, Internet Options, settings button,
view files, the cookie looks like this:
cookie: owner/office.microsoft.com
Also click Objects, you may have to click details in the view menu. Delete any object
that is unknown.

The Internet zone security levels on your computer must be set to Medium, or if your
Internet zone security levels are set to High, the Microsoft Office Online Web site
must be listed on your computer as a trusted site.
To add the Microsoft Office Online Web site to your list of trusted sites:
On the Tools menu in Internet Explorer, click Internet Options, and then click the
Security tab.
Click the Trusted Sites icon, and then click Sites.
Clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.
In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type http://office.microsoft.com, and then
click Add.
Click OK twice.

If you are running Microsoft Windows® XP with Service Pack 2, it is possible to
disable or enable ActiveX controls by using the Manage Add-ins command on the Tools
menu in Internet Explorer.
The Microsoft Office Template and Media Control may have been disabled. If so, you
cannot automatically download clip art and media or templates on Office Online, or do
practice sessions in online training courses on Office Online. To enable the control:
In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Manage Add-ons.
Select Microsoft Office Template and Media Control in the list of controls.
If you do not see that control listed, click the arrow on the Show box at the top of
the Manage Add-ons dialog box, and then select Add-ons that have been used by
Internet Explorer. Then select Microsoft Office Template and Media Control in the
list of controls.
Under Settings, click Enable. You may see a message saying that you need to restart
Internet Explorer for the change to take effect. Click OK, and then click OK again.

Did you compact your Organizer? Open the Organizer from the start button, Microsoft
Office Tools, once the Organizer is open, tools, compact.

Are you sure you are on-line when you are using Publisher? Open help in Publisher,
scroll down to "See also" click Online Content Settings.

Look at your firewall settings...

Mary--I went step by step through every single suggestion you gave me and
nothing worked. I then tried two different restore points and neither of
those worked either. One strange thing that happened--BEFORE I did the
restore points, I looked into Manage Add-Ins. Under "Add-ons that have been
used by Internet Explorer", the "Microsoft Office Template & Media Control
was listed and checkmarked as "enabled". After I did the restore points,
undid them, and then restored the system back to today's date, the Microsoft
Office Template & Media Control is NO LONGER listed at all. In reading the
"Help" section, it said that if your control is NOT listed, the system
administrator has to add it. Can you tell me what that process is? Do you
feel at this point I should hire a professional to come in? I've spent hour
after hour on this problem and I'm no further ahead. I still can't figure
out why it suddenly stopped working when I made NO changes to any settings
prior to the problem. Again, do you think I should hire a professional? Do
you have any other suggestions? Is there any other user group that I should
address this problem with? Thank you for all your help.

Maybe your Organizer is corrupt.
Find the Mstore10.mgc file, it is in a folder (hidden) similar to this:
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Microsoft\Clip Organizer

Right-click your Mstore10.mgc file, click Rename on the shortcut menu, and change the
three-letter file name extension from .mgc to .old.

Run Clip Organizer.

Clip Organizer creates a new Mstore10.mgc file automatically.
After Clip Organizer creates the new catalog file, you must re-import any custom
clips that you previously imported, and retype any clip property information that you
manually created.

Did you do the "detect and repair?"

More times than not the Organizer quits working because of a full Internet temp
folder or the Organizer needs to be compacted.

When you visit
http://office.microsoft.com/templates/axinstall.aspx?FromArea=Clipart
Does the message say the ActiveX installation was successful?

Mary--before I do this last suggestion, would a corrupt Organizer also
prevent me from accessing Microsoft online help? And hyperlinks? It seems
to me that my problem is something locking me out of the internet connection
from Publisher. If it was just clip organizer being corrupt, that wouldn't
stop the hyperlinks (to a website) or on-line help from working, would it? I
have gone through my firewall and anti-spyware software tab by tab and
nothing is blocked. I'm just at a complete loss.

Did you put the Office web site in your trusted list? Is this the only web site you
cannot access?

A

AustinPAWS

Mary, yes, Microsoft Office is in my trusted zone. I have no problem
accessing it outside of Publisher. It's just that when I'm in a publisher
document, whether print or web, and I try to access online help, or clip art
or a hyperlink within the document, nothing happens. Could it be that I have
to ADD the ActiveX control into the Internet Manage Add-ons? The
Microsoft Office Template and Media Control control do NOT appear in either
Manage Adds-on or Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer. Can you
give me a step by step on how to ADD the ActiveX control. The only info I
could find in Microsoft help on it was that to add an Active X control, it
could only be done by the system administrator. Other than that, I couldn't
find any info on how to do it. Thank you for persevering with me! Sue

Open help in Publisher, scroll down to "See Also", click on Online Content Settings,
is everything checked?

The ActiveX is automatically installed when you go to this web site:
http://office.microsoft.com/templates/axinstall.aspx?FromArea=Clipart

It will say, Status, The Microsoft Office Online ActiveX has been Installed
Successfully.

In Publisher, help, about Microsoft Office Publisher, click the "Disabled Items", see
if ActiveX has been disabled.

Do you have a third party pop-up blocker?
1.Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
2.On the Tools menu, point to Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings.
3.In the Address of Web site to allow box, type http://office.microsoft.com, and then
click Add.
4.Click Close to close the Pop-up Blocker Settings dialog box.

Are you certain your fire-wall is allowing Publisher?
This problem may occur if your personal firewall software is configured to block
third-party cookies.

Do you have Norton? In Norton Options, misc., clear Office Plug-in.

Do you have the Office service pack?

Mary--can I have your email address? This post process is very cumbersome
and I have trouble wading through everything to find your last response. I
have XP HOME edition (not Professional), with Service Pack 2. When I tried
the download you gave me "9c51d3a6-7c: I got the response "the dowload you
requested is unavailable" . When I tried it the 2nd time, I got the message
"No results found". When I went to the website "templates/axinstall" etc., I
got the message "failed to install". When I researched it, it said that
Service Pack 3 was required before it would install. When I tried to
download updates to my system, tthe update aborted because I didn't have the
disk for XP PROFESSIONAL. I have XP HOME installed on my system, NOT
Professional. So, I think the problem is the missing ActiveX control. Could
it be that I had access to Office online clips only because I had a free 60
trial with my new computer? I don't have Office 2003 SUITE. I just
purchased Publisher 2003 as that is all I needed. Should the standalone
Publisher 2003 product come with online clips and help?????? Please send me
your email address--my summer email address is (e-mail address removed). Thank
you.

So use a proper newsreader then! Of course it's cumbersome - you're using the
CDO! Why should you be so favoured as to receive individual attention?! All
posts must stay in the groups so that they can be there to benefit others who
may be having the same issue.

Oh and posting your full address on Usenet is the height of stupidity (mind
you, I didn't really have high expectations of you and, so far, you've not
disappointed) - spammers will think that their birthdays and Christmas have
come at once!

If you *MUST* post your address type it long hand

tdrum (AT) rochester (DOT) rr (DOT) com - but, like I said, it's too late
now... I hope you have a decent spam filter.

What set you off? I thought that this was a professional group of people.
Since I am having very tecnical problems specific to MY PC and this thread is
no longer of interest to the Publisher 2003 community, I thought I would just
try to get help behind the scenes. In the past, I have sometimes been
requested to switch over to email, so I didn't think it was that out of line.
I have no idea why you were compelled to make such rude and unnecessary
attacks. I stated in my earlier posts that I am not a techical person--I'm
wading through Publisher 2003 in order to help (strictly volunteer) a no-kill
animal shelter. I'm trying to save the lives of abandoned companion animals,
not trying to impress you.

I'm certainly interested to see whether you manage to sort this issue, and
if you do, what the fix is.

A

AustinPAWS

Yes, Ed, I certainly will. So far, still no luck. I have a feeling it has to
do with the ActiveX control for the Microsoft Template and Media Control.
Microsfot Template and Media Control is not listed at all in either of the
two "manage add-ons" menus. I tried to download it via the link Mary gave
me, but it aborted. One of the possible reasons cited for the download
failure was not having Service Pack 3 installed. (I have XP HOME with Service
Pack 2). So, I tried downloading Service Pack 3 and that, too, aborted. I
was told to insert my disk for XP PROFESSIONAL, which I don't have (I have
XP HOME, which was installed by a licensed technical person who is in Texas
and I'm currently in NY). So, I'm not sure what to do at this point.

Hi Ed--I told you that I would get back to you. Would you believe that I am
up and running again, just before I made the phone call to the local computer
expert! I tried one more system restore--much further back this time, and
everything is working perfectly again. I would like to take this opportunity
to publicly thank Mary Sauer for all her help. She provided me with so many
Microsoft links to look into relative to the problem I was
having--unfortunately, because of my system problem, I wasn't able to open
them! She certainly persevered and I am very appreciative.

Thanks for the update :)
A pity that we didn't work out the root cause of your problem, but I'm glad
to hear that you fixed it.

Why don't you try Google images. There are zillions of good art files there
to copy and paste into your document.
