Stop a user leaving a field without entering something

I am sure this is fairly obvious ...

But how do I stop a user leaving a field on a form without entering
something. I am using several different field types (dates, numbers and text)
and combo boxes and text

I tried >0 for numbers and validation rules but it still lets me click in
the field and then leave with nothing entered.
