Stop auto coloring cells

I have a grade book in Excel where I shade cells depending on the grade. (For example, a low grade may be shaded yellow.) When I insert a new column and clear all formatting, some cells will turn yellow automatically after I enter data. I want Excel to stop doing this, but I see no options in AutoCorrect that control this (and I can't see any pattern as to which cells it wants to color).

Any advice?

Thanks,
Mark

Look in the Edit preferences, and uncheck; Extend range formulas and
formats.
