Storage of Customizations

The more I understand Word, the less I understand Word.

Background: Word 2002. No normal.dot template kept between
sessions. Two startup templates, but neither is attached to a new
blank document. No startup scripts.

Question 1: My default normal font is TNR 12 pt., not TNR 10 pt.,
which is what Word supplies out of the box. I assume I made that
changes at some point, but where is it kept?

Question 2: I went through the Bullets/Numbering dialog and reset
all of the options. That change--as the previous changes to that
dialog--are sticky. But how? Where are they retained, if there's
no normal.dot nor other attached template that persists between
sessions?

The default font in Word 2000 and above is 12-pt TNR. Numbering defaults are
stored in the Registry.

Normal.dot *is* retained between sessions or should be. It is a hidden file,
so you need to display hidden files in order to locate it, and as Suzanne
indicates TNR 12pt *is* the default. Set tools > options > save > prompt to
save normal.dot .Format the normal paragraph style to TNR 10 point. Click
the add to template check box. Close Word. Respond yes to the prompt to save
normal.dot. Restart Word. Is the default font now TNR 10pt? That change is
saved in normal.dot.
