Strange arrows appearing in my tables

I am using Microsoft 2000 and am creating tables using
the table menu. I created some tables with borders in
them.

Now when I go to insert rows below or above, the new rows
have arrows at the ends of the borders and I can't seem
to get rid of them.

Anyone else come up with this?

Has it corrupted (what ever that means!)
