Strange speed issues

Andy

I have a windows server based network with 6 clients. All running Office 2000
SP3. Several weeks ago we had a problem with winsock corruption. Once
resolved, any word or excel documents are slow to open regardless if they are
on the server or local. The odd part is that if a workstation is physically
disconnected from the network, local documents open almost instantly. but as
soon as the network is reconnected, the same document will be back to the
same speed (10 -30 seconds). I've already rebuilt the DHCP array on the
server - but it did not help. It seems to be something with how MS office is
looking for the doc during opening. Any suggestions?

Chances are that your server has a new UNC address. Documents are searching
for their original templates using the old address. When you are connected
to your network, a lengthy search is involved. You can cure this with a
macro that opens documents and attaches the normal.dot template to them (if
this will be OK).
