Suddenly, "Receiving reported error (0x800CCC90)"

We installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 on Saturday afternoon, February 14.
Starting yesterday, one of our email addresses produces this error:
Task 'JandNMain - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC90) : 'Your incoming
(POP3) e-mail server has reported an internal error. If you continue to
receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service
provider (ISP). The server responded: -ERR problem retrieving message.'
We can send emails from this account, and all our other email accounts work
fine. The settings have not changed, and we verified them with our ISP
yesterday They said this is a problem on Microsoft's end.
When we use our ISP's browser, only one email to that account has an
attachment, and that message is only 303KB, which is definitely not the issue.
This is our primary email address, and we need to be able to deal with its
messages. Please let us know how to resolve this!

I too started with this same problem on Saturday...different error code
though. I can send from ISP provider's website and this morning sporadically
I was able to send email from Outlook to just a few contacts, but now I am
right back to not being able to send. I have been on the phone with tech
support at Dell, I've had TREND on the phone and on chats...and even if you
disable or turn off your antivirus it does not prevent this error from coming
up. I've completely uninstalled the antivirus software and had nothing on
the computer and still get the error. I've uninstalled Outlook and
reinstalled and still nothing. I have to agree with your ISP that this is a
Microsoft problem and I see that there are several other posts this weekend
for very similar problems....different error codes. It's not antivirus or
ISP that is causing the problem. Microsoft needs to check into this and see
if it is a bug!

We are TIRED (sorry for the caps - no formatting possible!) of Microsoft
sending us around & around in circles! This is only happening with one of
our email accounts (we have eight), which imeans neither the ISP nor the
antivirus software is the problem. Microsoft needs to fix this - nwin6149 is
absolutely right! What is the SOLUTION?

I'm having the same problem - different errorcode (0x080042108). This
started in the middle of the day - no new programs installed. All of the
sudden, I just can't receive email! Sending seems to work ok though. I
agree - this has to be a MS error! How can we find the fix?!

Hi again! It is not just us...there are problems all over with this. I
spoke with ISP and they have several more accounts the same way. I've done
what they asked of me and did an outside looking in scan on the computer from
their website. I found. Go to
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp and do the security scan
for free. See if there is a bug on your system. My ISP seems to think it is
a virus that has gotten in. If you find a virus you can then search Symantec
to remove it. If not then we are back to the drawing board and back to
hounding MS to fix this.

Likely not, if the error explicitly says 'Your incoming (POP3) e-mail server
has reported an internal error." That's server-side and nothing in Outlook
can fix it. That's what the OP said, but if you're error doesn't say the
same, then it's not the same problem as the original and should be discussed
in its own thread.

Brian you are right!!! It has to do with spam mail on your ISP server. We
got ours fixed this morning. It makes the ISP server freeze on certain
accounts. There is a rash of spam mail coming in without a subject line and
without anything in the text box....have your ISP checking into it. That has
solved my problems so far today!!!

It's fixed for me now! I have Norton antivirus. After reading the other
replies, I decided to turn off computer, turn back on, and then ran Live
Udate. Then I started Outlook and tried again. Now it works. I'm relieved
but frustrated that it sucked up about 2 hours for me today!
