Summary Bars Critical or not

Andrew

I think I know the answer, but just in case !! I have a critical path running
through my programme, in one section the CP runs through the first 5
activities and then drops to the next section. The summary bar for the first
section is coloured red for the whole duration. Is there a way of showing
only the critical part of the summary bar as red?

Many Regards

Hi Andrew,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Summary tasks should not be linked as they are not tasks that get things
done. They thus should not form part of the critical path. That is one
reason that they have a black bar. If you're seeing red bars, then someone
has coloured that bar separately. You might like to see FAQ Item: 48 on
liking summaries. FAQs, companion products and other useful Project
information can be seen at this web address:
http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm . In any event there is no way to colour
any portion of the summary bar with a different colour.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi Andrew,

This is going to be a long story.
First, to avoid summary bars being red all along, go to Format, Bar Styles,
and look at the line saying "Critical".
In the column show for... you will probably see "Critical"
Replace that by Normal;Critical
Use a comma instead of a ; if you have Amarican settings.

Then select the summary tasks in turn and show their task information
In General Tab, check Show Rolled up Gantt Bars
Now select all nonsummary tasks
Show task information
Check Rollup Gantt Bars to Summary

Back to Bar Styles
For the line Rolled up task:
Change the color to red
in the Show For column add ;critical (or ,critical in Amarican settings)

That should do it

Guys

Thanks for the help. All went well until the last section Jan. MSP (2003)
would not let me add , critical, However it got me thinking and I added
another bar rolled non critical put that as blue and rolled up. I altered the
critical rolled up bar to rolled up, Critical and that worked I then hid the
summary bar and it snow shows the critical path at a high level.

Many regards

Andrew
