standard 2003 office. Why is this happening?

jj,
Well, without further information all I can do is take a stab at two
possible causes. First, is calculation set for automatic
(Tools/Options/Calculation tab)? Second, is the subtask being "updated"
a milestone?

John,

Thanks for the help. Yes auto calculate is ON, and no the subtasks are not
milestones. I have used Project fro several years but am not an expert. Just
have gotten by by getting out of it what I needed. However this is the first
time have have seen this situation. Problem is I have a couple of newbies
also using this project so they could have, in their zealous effrots, gotten
into areas of the project I know nothing about. So if you have any other
ideas please let me know.

jj,
Guess what, I've used Project for several years and I'm not an expert
either, so don't feel left out.

Let's take a look at some other possibilities. Do you have any links on
the summary task itself? Are all tasks under the summary line accounted
for (i.e. are all subtask IDs contiguous)? Are there any externally
linked subtasks under the summary?

Or, if you want, you can e-mail me the file and I can take a look at it.
If it has sensitive information, you can download a simple macro by
fellow MVP, Jack Dahlgren, that will remove sensitive information.
Jack's website is at:
http://masamiki.com/project/macros.htm
Look for the macro called "scrub"
