Summing specific numbers

I have a worksheet in which I am summing several rows of
numbers. I need to sum the same cells a second time but
only if I flag the cell, I would like to just change the
cell color or place a letter in front of the number. I am
currently changing the formula every time, but am hoping
there is a better way..
Any help will be appreciated.

I wouldn't use colors--it makes it more difficult.

but if you use a helper cell adjacent to the value cell

=SUMIF(A1:A10,"x",B1:B10)

If you put x's in A1:A10, this'll add the associated stuff in B1:B10.

(There's an =countif() function, too.)

See Excel's help for more info.
