Sun to Give Out Operating System for Free.
Is there a software base available?
What impact will this have on Windows and Lindows?

Every version of x86 Solaris Unix has been available for free download at
one time or another for many years now.
If your selling hardware servers the more people familiar with the software
your servers use the better, so x86 versions have usually been free. Sun is
a hardware company first and foremost, despite what some might think.
I have Solaris x86 free versions 8, 9 and soon 10.
Lindows (now Linspire) is a Linux OS and most applications written for Linux
will run on Solaris x86 or a version has been written for Solaris. For
example, Open Office has a Solaris x86 version available for free download.
This isn't new news.
The new news is they plan to GPL the source code.
If you plan to try installing it you'd better backup everything as Solaris
will format your hard drive and destroy everything on it. You can set it up
to dual boot later, but Solaris insists on being the first OS installed.
I wonder why you posted that here, as I doubt anyone here cares?

Not news. It was not expensive before anyway. Will have minor impact.
If you want to discuss, suggest you take this to a newsgroup that
discusses operating systems (unlikely the XP newsgroup people will be
that interested).

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Sorry for posting OT.
Thanks for the good information. With all the hype on the newswires, I
thought it was new and a big deal. -Anything to compete with Micro$oft.
