svchost process

I recently had to reload all of the Office suite and now, each time I boot,
an svchost process initiates which consumes all available cycles, running at
99% and the boot process takes forever. If something else is initiated after
the boot completes, the usage drops, but never less than 50% and everything
runs slow.

The reason I believe that this is MS related is that if I cancel the
process, the appearance of MS software changes - the page backgrounds are
white instead of the normal blue. This isn't particularly significant, but I
wonder what else is affected.

Does anyone have a clue what is going on and what I need to do to fix this?
