Table and Borders Toolbar for Word 2003

I'm looking at the functions available on the Table and Borders
toolbar and I'm confused.

There seems to be an icon which switches on and off the borders, so
there is a selection of a square and the sides which add or delete the
outer borders.
Within the same set, how do i get the "cross" icon to have an effect?
What is the "horizontal line" for?

Regards

The vertical and horizontal line with objects on either side of the line are for the inside lines of tables. They have no function on a simple box Lets say you have a two column table and want to remove the visible line between the two columns. You would highlight the entire table and then click the vertical line. This would cause the inside line to disappear. If you clicked on the horizontal line, the lines between the rows would disappear.

| |_ these are the ones I am talking about.
|_ This does the same for both vertical and horizontal lines within the table..
