Can anyone recommend a source that explains in detail how
to create a table of contents where if one clicks on an
item in the TOC it automatically jumps to that part of
the document.

All TOCs will do this. For general information on creating a TOC, see
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html. In Word 97 and earlier,
only the page number is hyperlinked. In Word 2000 and above, the entire
entry is hyperlinked by default (if you don't care for this, you can disable
it by removing the \h switch in the TOC field code). In Word 2002 and above,
by default you have to Ctrl+click to follow the link.

It never ends!

I have a large document with a TOC already created (not
via the Word heading method). The headings were not
created with the standard Word headings. I tried
following the tips in the link provided below to create a
new TOC, but anytime I try to apply the heading style to
the heading text (or update heading style to match text),
it starts screwing with the numbering. ARGH!!!!

What I'm ultimately trying to do is get a hyperlinked
TOC. I am using Word 97.

The heading style/numbering used in the document is
standard technical/engineering: 1, 1.1, 2, 2.1, 2.1.1,
etc... It goes six levels deep but the TOC only needs to
go 3.

Why is it that I can't do one single thing in Word without
creating two other problems in its place???

in setting up outline-numbered heading styles. Note that in Word 97, only
the page number will be hyperlinked, not the entire TOC entry (this feature
was introduced in Word 2000).
