Tables Float Property

L

Lloyd

I am trying to place a Nav Section to the left of my web
page. I can insert a Frame, but would rather create the
section as part of my Home Page. I also need it below the
Header. Just a colored square with links on it. I have
tried a Table using align left and float left and right
(Table<Insert) but my Body text keeps jumping below the
table when I insert it. What is the best way to create
what appears to be a separate pane on a web page with
links on it (A border would be great!)? This pane should
be below the Header and to the left of the Body
(<H1>,<H2>,<P>) Text??
Thanks

I have to admit I'm confused about what you're trying to
accomplish.

If you just want a colored square as normal page content:
1. Set the cursor *before* the place where you want the
square to be.
2. Choose Insert Table from the Table menu, and then
select Table.
3. Create a one-celled (or more, it doesn't matter)
table, setting Float to Right and Background Color to
whatever you want.
4. Click OK, then insert whatever content you want.

The key here (and what might be confusing you) is that
when a table floats right, it starts appearing at the
right of the current line. So, if you box is a table
inside another table, and you want it to appear at the
top right corner, physically insert it at the top *left*
corner. This guarantees a "top" position. The
align="right" attribute (which FrontPage calls Float)
will shift the box to the right.

Life is more complicated if you want a box that floats
over other page content, maintaining a constant position
in the browser window as the visitor scrolls the page up
and down. In that case, you have to create the box as an
absolutely positioned DIV (i.e. a "layer") and write
JavaScript code to reposition it whenever the visitor
resizes the browser window or scrolls the display up or
down.
