Task Pane in MS PowerPoint '07

I don't think you can, actually. It opens only when PPT deems it necessary,
and I believe one of the "rules" is it can only be opened from a tool on the
ribbon. There aren't multiple panes in the task pane anymore, if that makes
sense. You can't get from one pane to the other (by selecting a different
pane at the top of the task pane), but you can have more than one pane open
at the same time.

So, for example, if you choose Custom Animations on the Animations tab, the
custom animation task pane opens. If you then choose the Selection Pane
option from Home Tab | Select | Selection Pane, the Selection and Visibility
Pane opens beside it.

Yes, Echo is right. If you look at the spreadsheet that gives you the
translations of commands from 2003 to 2007 (go to Help> scroll down and click
Find your favorite PowerPoint 2003 commands in PowerPoint 2007> New Locations
of Familiar Commands> and then right under that heading look for the Ribbon
Mapping Workbook link), next to Vew>Task Pane it says:

Dialog launchers in some groups will launch a Task Pane instead of a dialog.
E.g. Home | Clipboard | Dialog Launcher.

So, as Echo says, the task pane appears only in response to a specific
command.
