Task scheduling with time to spare

I'm hoping for suggestions on how to handle the following example
situation:

===
I'm assigning an 8 hour task to Bob on Monday which is due by end of
day Friday that same week. Bob could work on the task all day Wednesday
or over the course of the week, or whenever.

This task as part of an overall project schedule and it's a predecessor
to other tasks, but I want to give Bob the whole week to do it.
===

I want my costs to be accurate (8 hours of Bob's time), but I also want
my schedule to reflect that whole week has been blocked of for that
task's completion.

I know I could block off 8 hours on Monday and "start no earlier than"
for the subsequent task, but I'm wondering if anyone has a more elegant
solution.

Let me know.

Thanks,

-C

Try Window/Split...
In the bottom pane, key all the information-- task name, change task type to
Fixed Work. Select your resource name (or type it in) and put 8 hours in the
space for work. Change the duration to anthing desired such as 3 days or 5
days. Click OK.

Project will peanut butter the 8 hours equally among all the days of
duration. Remember, work and duration are two different variables which is
exactly the situation you are describing.
