Task Summary and Baseline Work Summary

T

Tom Friske

I have a project where I have several subtasks that are assigned a task type
of Fixed Work and one of the subtasks is assigned a task type of Fixed Units.
When I look at the summary task for these subtasks, the Baseline Work value
does not add up to the Baseline Work for all of the subtasks. If I change
the task type to Fixed Work for the one subtask that was assigned Fixed Units
and save the baseline (Tools -> Tracking -> Save Baseline and then "Select
Tasks" and "To all summary tasks"), the Baseline Work in the summary task now
adds up to the total in the Baseline Work column for all of the subtasks.

Am I correct in assuming that the Baseline Work value in a summary task will
not equal the sum of the Baseline Work for all of the subtasks if there is a
mixture of task types within a group of subtask? Could you explain to me why
this happens?

Thanks
Tom

Hi Tom,

No, I wouldn't make that assumption.

The baseline work field for a summary task is the sum of the baseline work
fields for its subtasks. My guess about the differences you are seeing
would be that somewhere along the line an individual task was re-baselined
(or baselined if it was a new task) and when the baseline for the task was
saved, it was not rolled up to the summary task, leading to the difference
between the summary task baseline work and the total baseline work for the
subtasks.
When you re-baselined and rolled up the baselines to the summaries, they all
add correctly, but this has nothing to do with the task type. If you had
re-baselined as you describe without changing task type, the summaries would
correctly add.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
