Taskbar flashes and document speed scrolling when indenting.

Word 2003. When I indent (tab) a sentence, the taskbar with the document
name continually flashes and the document I am working in speed scrolls to
the end of the document. If I right click on the taskbar with the document
name, it will stop, but immediately starts when the indent (tab) is hit
again.

Sounds as if you might have some Addin or macro linked to the tab key. This
happens in all documents? If yes, try holding CTRL to start Word in Safe Mode.
Now test if it's still happening.
