Templates on a Server

T

Tee

We have a varity of templates for all members of the Office family that are
on our server at work. How do we get Word/Excel/Etc to recognize them as
templates? Right now we have to remember to do a 'save as' in order to not
change the templates.

We are using Office 2002

TIA

Hi, Tee,

When you want to use a template, be sure to use File | New, instead of File
| Open. If you open the template, then you are modifying the template.
Also make sure that you are using the proper file extensions for templates,
such as *.dot for Word. That will help the default behaviour work properly.

Hi Susan,

We are doing all that. Going to file - new - find the template (which I've
double checked have the right extension) on the server and open it. But it
still just goes ahead and saves over the template, as a template, if you
don't use 'save as.' Its making me batty!

Does the same thing happen if you choose a template on the local drive
instead of the server?

And one more question: If you use Windows Explorer to navigate to a
template, then right-click on it, which action in the shortcut menu is bold?
New or Open?

Two excellent questions:

Standard templates work as they should, i.e. giving me a save as window if I
change them.

Opening from Explorer New is bolded and it works right if I open it that
way. Which I could tell our gang to do, only I don't think most of them
think to do it that way.

So everything works right except if I go File - New - Out to our server and
open a template.

Thanks for your help Susan.

Hm. Have you set up the location of the templates in Word under "Location
of Workgroup Templates", in Tools | Options | File Locations?

Interesting. So, before, in Word, when you chose "File | New", how did you
navigate to the location of templates on the server? Normally, when you
select "File | New", you get a list of templates and wizards (no documents)
in your default templates directory and your workgroup templates. You
shouldn't have seen the templates on the server, if it wasn't set up as a
default template location.

*slaps self on forehead*

yes, if I do that it works. I'm an idiot!!

Thanks for all your help Susan!
