Confused about Templates

when using templates in Word, how do I enter info within a contract template
where I need it to be? For example, on a contract I need to enter the day,
month, year, and the persons names that are involved.
Right now, I have underlined places where this info needs to be put and when
I type on the underlined areas, they shift the whole document.
Can someone help me with this issue?

Presumably this template was provided by someone else? Sometimes they'll
tell you to turn on Overtype so that you overwrite the underlines, but in
most cases forms that are set up this way are created by those ignorant of
proper methods of form creation. If this is a document someone else has
given you that you need to return, do it any way you want; if you make a
mess of it, that's the sender's problem. If it's something you've acquired
for your own use (and I hope you didn't pay for it), try turning it into a
bona fide form using the tips in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/FillinTheBlanks.htm and especially
the forms tutorials by Dian Chapman that this article links to.
