Text is marked 'Do not check spelling and grammar'

Every time I do a spell check, Word tells me it did not check some or all of
the text because it is marked 'do not check spelling and grammar'. I have not
intentionally marked it in this way so how come this is happening? And, more
important to me, how do I make sure text is not marked in this way? I'm a
careless typist and need spell check! Thanks.

Select the entire document (Ctrl+A), then go to Tools | Language | Set
Language. Make sure that the language is set appropriately and that "Do not
check spelling or grammar" is *not* checked. It's also a good idea to turn
off "Detect language automatically," which can have unpredictable results.
