I was working making a project when the system hung after
pressing the details button on the resource dialog. I
closed a couple office apps (outlook and word), and
project was still hung. Then project just disappeard
(like doing a task manager process kill). When I
restarted all my work was lost (not good when I am
demoing the product!) and I get the message "trial period
expired"

Could be either of a couple of things

Here is the first:

If you haven't installed previous versions as described above, then
sometimes the trail version has a hardcoded expiration date (this might
happen if you are installing off a cd). Try
http://www.microsoft.com/office/project/prodinfo/trial.ms px to see if that
will work for you.
