This document could not be registered

Since updating to SP2 whenever I open a word document I get an error saying,
"This document could not be registered. It
will not be possible to create links from other documents to this document."
I found a KB to fix word but when I type "=rand()" w/o quotes I get the
sentence about the lazy fox. Also, OSA.EXE always seems to consume 99% of my
CPU so I have to end the task to use my puter.

This is Office XP...

I have tried the above mentioned KB. Then I uninstalled office, went in the
registry and deleted every reference to office I could find then reinstalled
office. I still get the error. Can someone help?

Thanks,

Chuck

Does it start OK in Word's 'safe mode' - click the Start button in the
bottom left of your screen, select Run, and type winword.exe /a ? If so,
work through the fixes in the link posted by Suzanne.

According to the link the protection is to install WinXP SP2. It was when I
installed SP2 that I started having the problem. I tried running the fix and
it says I have SP2 so it won't install. How do I get around this?

Actually, I use CA antivirus. I had it scan and I ran spybot and adware and
they didn't find anything.

I started getting this error after SP2 but I also made one
more change to my system after installing SP2, that was to
disable the DCOM Server Process Launcher.
Just testing to see if this was a necessary service. Well it is,after
restarting this service, the Word error message went away.

Restarting the "DCOM Server Process Launcher" service worked for me
too.

Which is annoying, because I would rather not have it running
