Timed Out (0x8004210B) and Unknown Error (0x800CCC0B)

Dan G.

I'm reposting this because I got ZERO replies the first itme around. I also
have an update. If my end-users simply wait for up to a few hours their
e-mails will eventually send. ALSO, (one of my techs discovered this one) if
you move their outbox e-mails to drafts (or some other folder) and open each
one individually and re-click "send"--they go, no problem.

Any ideas? Anyone? Everyone?

I'm stumped.

Everything was fine until 4 or 5 weeks ago a few of my users intermittently
receive these errors—0x8004210B (timed out) and 0x800CCC0B. I’ve searched
the KB and tried everything that I could find (even some of the stuff for
OL2002)—no go.

We're using OL2003 SP1 (11.6359.6360 which I think is most current) on
Windows XP systems. I might be one month behind on my SUS server for
approving and deploying updates.

I've tried disabling my Trend Micro Office Scan as well as disabling the XP
OS firewall.

I can telnet to my co-loc'd POP3 server no problem as well as sending test
messages via same.
I’ve set the timeout values to 5 minutes—doesn’t help. Although I don’t
have a sniffer pings go and return fine (and quick) and I don’t think any
packets are being dropped/lost.

Incoming mail has never stopped working.

I've also seen that if I restart Outlook, take all outbound e-mails out of
the Outbox and put one at a time back in, some may go out. I've also noticed
that one or more or all appear to become corrupted -- if I copy the contents
into a new message and send that one--it will often go!

Some users will not receive the error message at all—they’ll just have
undelivered e-mail sitting in their Outbox.

Shutting down and/or restarting rarely helps—but sometimes does. I've also
tried configuring the SMTP server from my ISP provider—that doesn’t
help—problem persists. I’ve even tried a few different SMTP outbound
servers—problem persists. I have one laptop user that encountered this
problem a few days go and he switched to his broadband internet card and
everything went out fine. Never the same few users twice.

What kills me is the problem comes and goes. I’ll get help desk calls from
a few users but everyone else will be fine. I’ve even had the problem on my
own PC.

I’ve run SCANPST with no consistent success.

Here’s a OPMLog.log from a user that has 13 e-mails sitting in her Outbox
although you wouldn’t know it looking at line 3:

I found that KB Article, too. We are using Outlook Professional Ed 2003
(11.6359.6408) SP1 and not Outlook 2002 Standard. Also, our e-mail server
does not require SSL or SPA.

I found that KB Article, too. We are using Outlook Professional Ed 2003

does not require SSL or SPA.

:

I've been getting the same thing. It started after an automatic update from
my Norton anti-virus software. If I disable my internet security, the
e-mails work fine. I've contacted Symantec a few times but no one there
seems to know anything. It's certainly is not a "fix" but at least I can use
my e-mail program.

I've been getting the same thing. It started after an automatic
update from my Norton anti-virus software. If I disable my internet
security, the e-mails work fine.

I though "Internet Security" was a function of Norton IS and not of Norton
AV. If the former, make Outlook an exception to the Norton firewall. If
the latter, disable mail scanning but keep the rest of Norton AV intact.

I have Norton Internet Security AntiSpyware edition. I've tried the e-mail
elimination. The only thing that seems to work is clicking on the task bar
icon and selecting "disable internet security". The antivirus still
operates...

That appears to be the firewall portion of NIS. Read your NIS documentation
on how to configure it to allow mail clients to operate through it.
