TOC and unusual page numbering scheme

Dear all:

I've got this ANNNEX.DOC file whose pages I've numbered as A-1, A-2, ...
This was simply done by just typing the "A-" just before the page number
field in the footer. However, this is "artificial" in the sense that a TOC
applied to this document keeps referring to the pages of the document as 1,
2, ... no "A-" is added to each page number. Any ideas as on how can I
"force" the page numbers in the TOC (I'm using the usual TOC styles) to dis
play the page numbers as A-n? Any help would be much appreciated.

Best regards to all,

Jorge

Hi =?Utf-8?B?Sm9yZ2UgQS4gRmVycmF6IGRlIE9saXZlaXJh?=,

You'd need to
- Format a paragraph in the document with a Heading style (usually Heading
1)
- Activate Numbering for the Heading style, with a number of "A"
- Set the option in Insert/Page Numbers/Format to pick up this chapter
number from the heading style

Hi Cindy:

Thanks for your repply, but perhaps I was not clear enough in my question.
I would like to obtain, automatically, a table of contents that might look
like this one:

1 Introduction ................................................... A-4
1.1 Subsection A ......................................... A-4
1.2 Subsection B ......................................... A-6
2 Objectives .................................................,.... A-6
....
You see, I don't want to modify the numbering of the Heading styles, I'm
quite happy with them as they are. What I want to modigy is the numbering of
the pages in the document (they should be "A-n" instead of only "n") and this
numbering to be automatically reflected in the page number of the various
sections and subsections, as shown above. Any simple way of doing this.

Best regards,

Jorge

The only way I can think of is that you create a toc the copy it and pastes
as text then edit-in your A-n, B-n page references

Then.... don't update or repaginate your document!!

Hi =?Utf-8?B?Sm9yZ2UgQS4gRmVycmF6IGRlIE9saXZlaXJh?=,

Your question was clear. But you're asking for something Word wasn't designed to
do. That means you'd either need to program the functionality from scratch
(non-trivial) that you need, or you need to work around the way Word was
designed.

since you hadn't already written a macro solution for this, but posted in a VBA
group, anyway, I figured you hadn't enough experience to be able to create the
non-trivial solution with just a couple of broad hints (like Edward made). So I
suggested a way that wouldn't require any macro, and would work within the
framework of what Word does support.

You can use a heading level that you aren't currently using in the document to
provide the "A" and format it such that it won't show in the final version. A
Heading 9 at the end of the document, for example.
