TOC W2003 - Windows 2000 Prof

Old files driving me crazy. Originally in WP, converted to W2000 then again
W2003. just updated (with track changes accepted). First Question: I had
marked Section 1 as heading 1 then Plan Description as heading 2, inserted
toc and field reads toc\o "1-3"\u which produces TOC Section 1 but
nothing for text in heading 2. Second Question: More confusing this same toc
included new text (which had been added as part of tracked changes) that
isn't marked as any heading at all. If I view the document map it includes
this new text and if I click on it, jumps to the text but is not marked as
any heading. What can be in there that its picking it up for toc.

Have you turned on Show Hidden Text (Ctrl-Shift-8 will do it) to see
what other fields are hanging around in your text, besides the ToC
field itself? There could be stuff left over from its WP days. (I have
Word2007 files that still have all the Index markers -- { XE } fields
-- that were created back in FrameMaker 4 and got into Word2003
via .rtf output.) Deleting the unhelpful ones will straighten you out.

I did have hidden text shown but no fields / codes to be found. I know
I had trouble with different things in the convertions, but this text happens
to be new text recently added.

There is something there however, using the document map it jumped to
the text (no fields or heading style) that its putting in the toc. I pasted
that text to a new document, inserted a new toc and it still appears. Then I
used paste special - unformatted, inserted toc and now says "no entries
found". I suspect I have to use the paste special in those areas to remove
whatever it's finding.

Thanks for your time.

Any paragraph style, not just built-in headings, with an "Outline level"
defined (Modify Style dialog box, Format, Paragraph, Indents and Spacing
tab) will display in the TOC and in the Document Map.

The Reveal Formatting showed 'outline level 1' which when I changed to 'body
text' solved my toc. I never used an outline level that I know of. How
would that become an outline? Just trying to understand. Thanks so much for
your time.

Guess I have control issues - I like to think for myself. lol

Without your help I'd never figure this out. Thanks again for thaking the
time.
