Problems using Document map part II

Hello. I have to post these questions because I didn't see the answers in
other posts. I do know a bit more about document map from reading other
posts but still had some remaining questions.

For some reason, it doesn't seem to work consistently for me. I use MS word
2003. I have a document that has a TOC, TOF, TOT which I update
automatically using f-9. Throughout the document, I use heading 1-5 for each
entry that I wish to keep linked to my TOC entries. I haven't had any
problems with TOC. I'm having all kinds of problems with Doc Map, TOF, TOT,
and captions.

Here is part II of my questions and this one focuses on the Table of Figures
and Table of Tables.

First, I thought that chapter numbers in captions would change automatically
if my document is changing. For instance:

3.5.2 (U) CSC descriptions
within this section there is a table with a caption below it that reads:
Table 3.5.2-1
Now if I am updating my document and insert a heading before 3.5.2, the
headings will automatically renumber fine. The new heading is 3.5.2 and now
CSC Descriptions becomes 3.5.3. But the table is still shown as 3.5.2-1. If
the headings autoupdate, why don't the figures associated with those chapter
numbers auto update?

Also, sometimes I have situations like this:

3.5.2.6 Startup Processing
within the section I have a diagram followed by the caption:
Figure 3.5.2.6-1

That is fine. But later as I make modifications to the document and then
update the TOF by selecting it and pressing f-9, the same caption will read
something like this:

Figure 3.5.3-3.5-6

In some cases, it seems like the numbers just get doubled: and it might read:
3.5.2.3.5.2.6-1 or something to that effect. I spend tireless effort
updating my figure captions again. Then a couple of hours laters as I have
made some new diagrams and inserted new pictures and captions the problem
returns. I'll update the TOC and TOF and suddenly a bunch of my captions are
totally wrong again; I mean captions that I never touched since the last
update of the TOF.

I must be doing something wrong. Perhaps it is simpler to just use 1
chapter level for figure captions. that would probably be easier. But what
is wrong with putting the full chapter levels before each caption? Is that
just a bad guideline? It seems impossible to maintain. When i started doing
it, I assumed that it would work just like the headings where you insert a
new one and the sections after it will get renumbered through the bullets and
numbering feature.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me? For now I am going to try redoing
my captions using a simpler scheme. I think I'll just set the numbering to
chapter level 1 (figure 3-1, 3-2, 3-3, 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, etc.).

Hi =?Utf-8?B?a2VtcG9maWdodGVy?=,

Heading numbering is controlled completely by Word. Caption numbering is done
with SEQ fields, which have to receive a command to update. Word will do this
for you if you insert a caption, or do something else that forces field
updating. Otherwise, you have to force things numbered with SEQ fields to
update, such as Ctrl+A, F9.
3.5.2.6 Startup Processing
within the section I have a diagram followed by the caption:
Figure 3.5.2.6-1

That is fine. But later as I make modifications to the document and then

Are the captions in textboxes (floating), or in-line with the text?

Oh, so if I use F9 to update my list of figures and table of contents, then
the cross-reference fields to my figures/tables will update then?

they SHOULD (but given the Word is Word, I won't say it WILL :))
