Too many lines at the bottom

Hello Excel 2000 gurus,

One day I found that approx. 3000 empty lines were
populating my Excel file. They are actually here, since
the box in the up-down scrollbar is tiny and I have only
~50 lines of data. And they also eat up space: the sheet
is ~400k.

In fact, if I copy the real data in a new sheet and
save it, I can see the size difference.

The problem is, I can't manage to delete these blank lines
using edit/delete or whatever regular method.

Strange pb isnt it ? And thanks in advance for the hint.

Delete the excess rows and columns outside of your used range and then save.
Don't delete all the way to 65,535, just the extra problem rows and columns.

Select all the rows below your data by clicking on the row headers and dragging down. Now hit
CTRL & - together (CTRL & Minus Sign) to delete the actual rows and not just the contents. Save
the workbook, close it and then re open it. That should fix it.
