Total Cost

My total cost is higher than the total of the task in the summary task as
well as the total cost. When I look at the cost in the cost views, their is
no evidence as to where the total comes from. The current example is the
project task total $135,964, but the project total shows $573,628. What's
wrong?

Deb,
First there are many cost fields in Project. It would be helpful if you
could specify the exact fields your are referencing.

Other than that, one possible explanation is that sometimes users enter
a value directly into the Cost field. This effectively creates a Fixed
Cost that is in addition to resource based costs. Another possibility is
that Calculation is set for "manual" and all costs are not being rolled
up. However, without knowing the fields you are looking at, it is
difficult to be more specific.

The task cost resulting from the work and duration appears to be correct as
well as task that also has a fixed cost for material appears to be correct.
But the Summary cost resulting from the task under that summary item, is not
correct and then the Total Cost resulting from the total of the Summary Cost,
which rolls up is not correct.

Hi,

That means ther eare costs immediately related to the summary tak itself,
like fixed costs entered at summary task level and/or Resources assigned to
the summary task.

Deb,
I'm not sure what you mean by, "...cost resulting from the work and
duration...". Cost is not related to duration in any way. In Project
costs are either, Work x resource rate, Material units x material rate,
or Fixed Costs.

Again, without knowing the exact fields you reference (e.g. are you
looking at Baseline Cost?), it is hard to tell what is going on although
Jan's suggestion that there are separate costs on the Summary Lines is a
very real possibility.
