Total Slack calculates differently in 2007

Hi,

Why does Total Slack compute differently between MS Project 2007 and 2003?

For example,

Create a task and set a deadline in the future,

In version 2003, the Total Slack will compute a positive value (DEADLINE -
FINISH date).
In version 2007, the same scenario will have a Total Slack compute to zero
(0).

Hi Jack,

I was doing this test with a single task to begin with. But now I checked
tools/options/calculate/"calculate multiple critical path" option, but it did
not make a difference in what I am saying. I still get zero (0) in 2007
unlike 2003 where I get a positive value if the deadline is after the finish
date!!!

See for yourself, there is a difference in between these 2 version when it
comes to calculating Total Slack with the same scenario ( a single task
project). Check it out in 2003. Let me know if you try it in 2003.

I checked my

Calculate multiple critical path should be UNSELECTED. If it is selected,
then any task with no successor is treated as a critical path and has total
slack of 0.

In a project with a single task, that task will ALWAYS be the critical path
and have total slack of 0.

You need more than one task and more than one path for total slack to be
different from 0.

Have you followed the steps I described? It sounds like you did not follow
them.

Hi Jack,

The poster is absolutely right, the behaviour has fundamentally changed.
I personally think this is a pity, others defend Microsoft's decision.
I recommended the use of deadline to create buffers (positive slack) now
it's back to the Project 98 method, linking to a MSO constrained milestone
:-(

Hi Jack,

In Project 2000-2003, a project with a single task, and the task having a
deadline later than its finish date, then the task would show positive
slack. Unfortunately this has been modified.
