Track changes

I've recently installed Office for MAC 2004, and am having a hard time
adjusting to the new features of TRACK CHANGES (or maybe I'm not using
them correctly). In the 2001 version, I could insert comments into the
text and they wuld be marked with little bracketed markers like this:
[CB1], [CB2], [CB3], etc.

Now i cannot find those markers when i insert comments. I prefer to
work in NORMAL VIEW. When I ask for Word to show comments all i get is
the balloon option, which i dislike (intensely!) The balloon comments
are clutter the page, but more important, they are not numbered. Even
when i display the reviewing pane the comments are not numbered and i
can find no preference that allows me to number the comments.

Any suggestions for how to revert back to the older system with those
bracketed, numbered comments?

Turn off the balloons in Preferences/Track Changes.

Comments, AFAIK, are no longer numbered, but they are time stamped.

The brackets show in Normal or Page Layout view. If you select text
before inserting the comments, the brackets will surround the text.
Otherwise the brackets will appear at the insertion point. They're quite
thin, and no longer contain your initials (if they surround text, your
user information appears in the screentip when you mouse over the
bracketed text). They appear in the color assigned to the user.

The only way to do that is to revert to Word X - that simply is not how
Word 2004 displays comments. If you don't want to do that, I'm afraid I
have to suggest that you just bite the bullet and get used to the
balloons, which don't need numbers because they point right to place
being commented on. You do not have to show the balloons, and you can
coordinate reliably between the reviewing pane and the main text (in
fact this actually works better than it did in previous versions - you
do see how to do it, right?). But in my Take Control ebook, which
develops a working methodology for dealing with the new regime, I end up
recommending the balloons because the reviewing pane's behavior is so
buggy. :( m.
