Tracking Project Actuals for Enterprise

M

The projects are effort based, with time tracking by week or day
depending on project, and actual work is entered in hours. I'm working
in an Enterprise solution with MS Project Server 2003, PWA, and MS
Professional. I want to enter my actuals in Professional and not PWA.
What effect does this have on reporting through Portfolio analyzer.
I'm entering the actuals by going to View>More Views>Task Sheet,
Format>Details>Actual Work.

There are some differences. In PWA, actual work is entered by task by
week. In Professional I can see all resources and can enter time per
resource per week if I so chose. Any help would be great!

Thanks

First of all, in the future please post your Server-related questions in the
microsoft.public.project.server newsgroup, as this newsgroup is going to
close down.

To answer your question, you can certainly enter actuals in the actual
Microsoft Project plan, but you should do so in a manner consistent with how
your resources enter actuals in PWA. This means you should use the Resource
Usage view with the Actual Work details applied to the timephased grid
(yellow/white timesheet on the right). If team members enter their actuals
on a daily basis, you should set your level of zoom to Weeks Over Days, and
then enter actuals the same way in the timephased grid. If team members
enter actuals on a weekly basis as a lump sum, you should zoom the timescale
to Months Over Weeks, and enter actuals as a lump sum for the week. If you
need to adjust the Remaining Work estimate, simply double-click the task
assignment, select the Tracking tab, and then adjust the Remaining Work
value in the Assignment Information dialog.

The most important thing to remember is that when you enter actuals in the
actual Microsoft Project plan, you must republish the assignments to "push"
the actuals to each user's timesheet in PWA using these steps:

1. Click Collaborate - Publish - Republish Assignments
2. Select the "Overwrite actual work entered by resources" option
3. Click OK

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice re: where to post server related issues and
entering Actuals.

You ROCK!
