transferring licenses

Hi,

I have gotten a new laptop and want to take my Office 2003 Small Business
Edition off my old computer which will be transferred to another employee and
put it on my new computer. Is there a way of canceling the license on that
computer, so that I can put it on my current one?

You can install Office Small Business Edition 2003 on a total of two computers:
one desktop computer and one portable computer, provided that the purchaser of
the software is the exclusive owner and user of the two computers. To install
Office Small Business Edition 2003 on more than two computers, you must
acquire another license of Office Small Business Edition. Licenses for Office
Small Business Edition 2003 acquired preinstalled on a new computer are
single-computer licenses. You cannot transfer these licenses or install them on
another computer.

So if I installed on a computer and a laptop, I couldn't have anyone
else use Office on either machine even when the other machine was
powered off?

But you could sell computer AND software as a unit, no?

[And there are some countries (other than the US) in which this ain't
the case.]

So you are saying that I have to buy everything all over again? Even though
one of the computers on which it was installed is now dead? This is the
reason for my switching computers. A dead motherboard and a computer not
worth fixing.

*IF* you have an OEM software license, meaning the software came
preinstalled, then you can only use the software legally on the machine
on which it came preinstalled. An argument could be made that you could
replace nearly everything but the case and still use the OEM version
legally.

On the other hand, if you have a retail version, then you can uninstall
it from the current machine and install on another (or, if your
harddisk is still working, put it in another PC).

The above is a VERY STRONG argument NEVER to buy OEM versions of any
software.

Thank you!

That was exactly my question. I spent around $400 on a retail version last
year. Now that that particular computer is all but dead, I want to take it
off the thing and reinstall it on my laptop.

The thing is, can I stop the license on the old machine and restart it on
the new one?

Yes. At worst you may need to use the phone activation and explain to
M$ what you are doing.
