Trouble-shooting search

I have WDS 3 beta installed, seemingly properly, but instant search fails:
I get 0 hits. The relevant folders and file types are checked. Almost
50,000 items have been indexed, but I left it overnight, and the same
number or almost the same remain showing as indexed. (Unfortunately I
didn't record the number, but I think it's the same.) Index Options says
"Indexing is paused" and has been saying this every time I check since
last night. Could this mean indexing has somehow stalled? When indexing is
complete, is there a message to that effect, or is indexing always said to
be "paused" when not actually occurring?

Does anyone have any ideas about how to troubleshoot this problem?

Indexing is paused, because you are working on your computer when you go
and check it. WDS tries not to index while a user is using the computer.
Which relevant folders and file types? Do you mean the two oneindex
entries?
Try rebuilding the index: Control Panel, Indexing Options, Advanced,
Rebuild.
Other users have reported that it's a hit or miss thing sometimes...

I had rebuilt the index, because of this same problem. When you say hit or
miss, do you mean that several rebuilds may be required till it gets it
right? What about when the index is rebuilt, assuming that's the
problem--is the index readily corrupted, so that more repeated rebuilds
are required? I realize there are no definite answers on this--I'm just
asking for your impression based on user reports.

No idea. All I know is that some users had their Instant Search suddenly
stop after 2 weeks and had to rebuild their index.
