Troubleshoot pictures and autoshapes - turned invisable

Suddenly all autoshapes and inserted pictures are invisable, i.e. I know they
are there but they are not showing up. In the format autoshapes box I cannot
get the colour or fill to change. Lines will not change colour even though
it allows me to select a colour. I have used "Detect and Repair" both from
the tool bar and from the original disk. Please can someone explain how to
fix!
